The old adage says that the only two things certain in life are death and taxes, but there’s a third certainty for Territorians – plenty of long, hot days.
Keeping a home cool in the Top End’s extreme conditions can be a tricky business, but when you build with Territory Homes, you can rest assured your new home has been built with the conditions in mind. We include a whole range of technologies and extras as standard (many of which other building companies charge extra for).
We do this because we don’t consider them extras – we know that they’re essential when you live in the climate we live in!
Some of the many features that keep a Territory Homes home cool include:
1. Fujitsu air conditioning
Our homes are fully air conditioned with quality Fujitsu inverter split systems to all living areas and bedrooms. This means that wherever you are in your home, you can easily adjust the climate to your liking. The great thing about split systems is that when those rare chilly days strike, you can use them to warm your home too.
2. Whirlybirds on the roof
Hot air rises, so there’s generally nowhere hotter in a home than directly under the roof. We install whirlybirds on all our homes to extract hot air from the roof cavity, meaning the house below is much easier to keep cool.
3. Invisi-Gard screen mesh
The days of ugly, obtrusive mesh screens are thankfully long gone. We use top-quality Invisi-Gard screen mesh to ensure your house can be opened to cooling breezes without spoiling your view. These screens also double as security screens, meaning you can sleep easy knowing your family is safe – even if you all like to sleep with your windows thrown wide open to catch breezes.
4. Your home’s colour scheme
There’s a couple of factors at play when it comes to colours and heat. Firstly, dark colours attract and retain more heat – so we’ll work with you to ensure you select exterior colours that will work best to keep your home cool on the sunniest of days. Secondly, choosing an exterior palette in cooler shades can really change your perception of a hot day. Cool greys, greens, blues and neutrals in interior spaces can make a subtle difference to how warm we perceive the air around us to be. Our consultants will work with you to choose an interior colour palette that will make your home feel cool and inviting all year round.
5. Colorbond roof and fascia with insulation
We use Colorbond roofs because we know that they’re the best product to withstand the intense heat and wild storms we live with in the Top End. Colorbond roofs come in a range of colours to suit all homes, with plenty of light-coloured options that will help reduce the amount of heat your roof retains. Each home also comes with top-quality roof insulation to keep the heat that collects under your roof from entering your home.
6. Tiled floors
At Territory Homes, we use large ceramic, porcelain, or wood-look floor tiles to help cool your home. Regardless of the style you choose, floor tiles are durable, easy to keep clean, and feel cool under foot. With a wide range of styles to choose from, you’re certain to find something to suit your style.
7. Ceiling fans
Ceiling fans are integral in any warm climate. They quickly and effectively cool the spaces below and help direct cool air around your home. They’re also energy efficient. Our homes can include ceiling fans in living and dining areas, your kitchen, bedrooms and the veranda. You can talk more to a Territory Homes consultant to work out the placement of your ceiling fans for best effect.
8. Cold water tap for fridge
Sometimes, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference! Our homes come with cold water taps ready to connect to your fridge, as standard. Depending on the features of your fridge you may be able to have chilled, filtered water and ice “on tap”!
9. L.E.D. Lighting
Our homes come with advanced L.E.D. lighting technology which keeps cool while flooding your spaces with brilliant light. Say goodbye to traditional ‘hot’ light globes, whilst saving money on your power bills too.
Or Maybe Take A Dip…
You can also consider adding our swimming pool package to your build. Pools are a much-loved way to quickly beat the heat and are guaranteed to be a place your family creates memories in for years to come. They’re also great for entertaining in and around!
